Aftermath: disaster, resilience & recovery:

It’s been quite a while since i’ve updated my page… the reason? I’ve been working on this online documentary called Aftermath, tracking the recovery of communities across Australia following natural disasters. We’ve just launched our site, please take a look - the timeline feature is particularly cool.

It has been an exhausting and emotional ride putting this project together - but that’s nothing compared to what some of the project contributors have experienced over the past year or more, as they try to pick up the pieces following floods, fires & cyclones.

I’ve been working on a couple of show reels for ABC Open’s first birthday over the last few weeks. This one features some of the great content from across regional Australia over the last few months.

This piece also features the voice over talents of my mate’s kids, Grace and Fin. Nice work grommies.

This video is Part 2 of the first episode of Marty’s story, captured by ABC Open for the project, Aftermath.

Marty Warburton was on the ground in Grantham on the 10th January 2011 when floodwaters destroyed most of the town he calls home.

Since the flood Marty has taken a leadership role in the community, helping others get back on their feet despite suffering the loss of his own businesses.

For the last few months I have been developing an online documentary project looking at how individuals and communities recover from natural disaster. The project is called Aftermath and it is being produced as part of ABC Open, a fantastic community engagement initiative being undertaken by your ABC.

Aftermath follows the stories of people who are trying to rebuild their lives and their communities; and to recover from these devastating events. These are stories of resilience, or ordinary people finding extraordinary strength to deal with the ongoing effects of natural disaster. The story may have started with the floods, storms or fire, but it’s not over yet.

The Aftermath site isn’t far away, but here is a sneak peak at the first videos in the series. This video is Part 1 of Marty’s story (I’ll post Part 2 also) and we’ll be revisiting Marty over the next 9 months to track his recovery from the devastating QLD floods.

We’ll also be looking for your contributions, through submitting photos and text via Flickr, and featuring a number of guest bloggers from disaster affected regions across Australia, telling their stories in their own words. More details will be on their way soon.

ABC Open

For the last 6 months I have been settling into my new role as ABC Multiplatform Editor for QLD. A big part of my role is ABC Open, an awesome community engagement initiative to enable people in the community to tell their stories.

Over the next 12 months we will have 45 Open Producers across regional Australia, working with their communities to create some unique Australian content. We already have 18 Open Producers on the ground, and the stories from our first project One on One: Change is great.

ARIA Award nominations for Before Too Long: triple j's tribute to Paul Kelly

Super stoked to get the news last week that the Paul Kelly tribute DVD that I produced and directed for triple j and ABC Music last year has been nominated for Best Music DVD at the 2010 ARIA Awards.

Not only that, but the CD release of the Paul Kelly tribute was also nominated for Best Original Soundtrack/Cast/Show Album.

It was an awesome event and it was great to be a part of it. Shout out to Chris Scaddan and Richard Kingsmill for the concept and pulling together an amazing bunch of artists, Musical Director Ash Naylor from Even for putting together the amazing band, Ed, Dave, Kiernan & Adam from Augie March for their awesomeness, Chris Thompson and Leah Baker at triple j recording and mixing the audio, all of my ABC TV crew for their hard work and great shots, Brendan Hutchens and Kath Earle for the opportunity, Jonathan Sequeira and Rowen Grant for their editing skills, BT, Andy Kent, Sean Richards & Sarah Flynn for making it all happen, all of the amazing artists for their performances and Paul Kelly for writing such amazing songs. I love you’se all.

Ladyhawke - My Delirium
I shot this gig towards the end of 2009, as you can see it is a pretty full-on light show and exposure was a real challenge. We decided to embrace the back-lit nature of the lighting and use the silhouettes to our advantage. Pip was extremely polite and friendly, it was a fun shoot. Enjoy!

What an amazing year Art vs Science have had, from Unearthed winners to Festival Favourites and Hottest 100 glory. Dan, Dan and Jim tore Marion Bay a new one over New Years on a stinking hot day.

I for one was not surprised to see them come in at #2 in the Hottest 100. Congrats lads.

This is one of my favourite moments from 2009, Lily Allen performing an intimate acoustic set for some very happy triple j listeners.

I didn’t really know what to expect from Lily’s voice live in an acoustic sense, I’d only seen her perform at festivals previously, and the sound on those occasions was pretty rubbish all round; but Lily really does have a great voice.

Not surprising that this track made it to Number 8 in the hottest 100, but I prefer this version to the album.

I was lucky enough to produce and direct a very special Paul Kelly Tribute show for triple j tv at the end of 2009. The concerts featured some amazing musicians including Missy Higgins, John Butler, Paul Dempsey, Katy Steele, Dan Sultan, Ash Naylor and plenty more.

The collaborative vibe of the entire event, the energy and passion of all of the performers and crew made this the most enjoyable project I have worked on so far.

Here is a little taste, the entire cast of the show performing From Little Things Big Things Grow. The CD and DVD will be available from ABC Shops and music stores in a month or so.
